Every bean, dialed in

Log the shot. Taste it. Mr BeanBag tells you which way to turn the grinder, one notch at a time, until the bag tastes the way the roaster meant it to.

01How it worksFour steps. Then it's just coffee.

From bag to balanced.

  1. 01
    Set up your gear

Pick your machine. It decides which values each bean tracks.

  2. 02
    Find your grinder

Type BES980 and it knows it's an Oracle, scale 1 to 45, lower is finer.

  3. 03
    Pull, time, taste

One tap starts the timer, one stops it. Then the only question that matters: sour, balanced or bitter?

  4. 04
    Follow the next shot

One notch finer, same dose. Three balanced out of four and the bag is dialed in.

Step 1: choose how you brew
Step 2: search for your grinder model
Step 3: log a shot with the timer and taste
Step 4: the bag is dialed in

The next shot, written for you

It reads your last shot and tells you what to change. Sour and fast means one notch finer. That's it. No guessing, no forum threads.

Asked at the counter.

What is Mr BeanBag?

Mr BeanBag is an espresso log for home baristas. You log each shot with the time, grind setting, dose, yield and how it tasted: sour, balanced or bitter. From that, the app suggests the next shot, usually one notch finer or coarser on the grinder, until the bag tastes the way the roaster meant it to.

When three of your last four shots are balanced, you can mark the bean as dialed in, and the recipe waits on the home screen every morning. It works with espresso machines, fully automatic machines, moka pots, French presses and filter brewers. It also has a shot timer with the right target for each brewer, and you can share a recipe as a QR code, a link or an image. Mr BeanBag is made by Sommerseth Design in Norway, and everything you log stays on your phone, with no account and no cloud.

How does it help me dial in espresso?

It reads your last shot. Sour and fast means grind finer. Bitter and slow means grind coarser. Balanced inside 25 to 30 seconds means same again. You change one thing at a time, so you always know what made the difference.

Which grinders does it know?

21 grinders and machines come with their own scale, steps and direction, from the Sage Oracle and Barista Express to Baratza, Fellow, Comandante and 1Zpresso. You can search by model number, like BES980. Any other grinder works too: set the scale yourself.

Where is my data stored?

Only on your phone. There is no account and no server for your shots. A backup is a file you save to a folder you choose, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud or the phone itself. Read more in the privacy policy.

What does it cost?

Mr BeanBag is free with three bags at a time. The full version is a one-time purchase of 59 kr and adds every bag, the archive, your own fields and suggestions for your machine. There is no subscription.

When can I get it?

Mr BeanBag is coming soon to Google Play for Android and to the App Store for iPhone.
